"I wanted to make shadow sculptures at first; flat rubbery forms that I could peel up from the ground and slap on a wall all sticky and abstract. I could make lots of them and pile car shadows up like so many 14 foot pancakes. Shadows seemed like the perfect byproducts of life; vital and mundane. I set out to capture them but like most art, it didn't turn out as expected.

"It began with a few drawings. I'd find a shadow and set the plastic underneath and draw what I saw. What I saw was a whole new world, utterly familiar, utterly unrecognizable. Ordinary objects cast shadows like space debris. How can a thing be both 'what the hell?' and 'oh sure.' I was taken. So I spent eight years developing techniques and tools. The drawings are on mylar because, on a transparency, light breathes through the drawing."

Katina Huston is a multi-media artist whose work encompasses ceramics, cast metals, drawing, and painting. The work explores the intersection of language, poetics, materiality, and the very real substance of the ephemeral: shadows whose cast forms accumulate and dissolve into meaning that is both related to and removed from the original concrete object that she started manipulating in her studio.

Katina Huston is represented by Dolby Chadwick Gallery in San Francisco, Chase Young Gallery in Boston, and Edition Vulfovitch in Stockholm, Sweden. Recent exhibitions include Big Noise at Dolby Chadwick Gallery, Shadow Drawings at Chase Young Gallery, Mechanical Repeat at Davidson Contemporary in Seattle, and West Coast Drawings VII curated by Norman Lundin at Koplin del Rio Gallery in Culver City, Los Angeles. Her work is in the collection of the Wynn Casino, Las Vegas, Dolby Studios, San Francisco, Schwab Collection, and the Ritz Carlton, and San Francisco Fine Art Museums, Achenbach Colleciton.

In addition to her visual arts practice, Katina Huston is a freelance art writer with articles published in Visions, Art Quarterly, the New Art Examiner, and Artweek. Katina Huston is the recipient of the Barbara Deming Award and served as Chair of the Alameda Public Art Advisory Commission (2004—2009).
