Larry Sultan

Inspired by everyday life, Larry Sultan constructed photographs that scrutinized his surroundings as much as the role of the artist himself. Frequently acting as a director, he would construct sets and instruct individuals to create a perfectly composed photograph. His series Pictures from Home (1992) featured portraits of his parents in their home, emphasizing his memories and perceptions of them. Thus Sultan's works became an illustration of the artifice of observation through photography. He has received numerous awards, including five National Endowment for the Arts grants, the Fleishhacker Fellowship, and the Guggenheim Fellowship, while his work has been exhibited at numerous institutions, including the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Tate Modern.
