About The Artist
An early admirer of Andy Warhol, Mary Heilmann combines elements of abstraction and Conceptual art with the bright colors, wit, and playfulness of the best Pop artists. A pioneer of postmodern art, a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and former instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York, she has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. “I’m not adverse to gorgeousness,” Heilmann has said of her work. “I just want it to look like it happened without a struggle.”
