Read MoreThis photograph is from Matthew Porter's series Pale Subtropical Light, a critical photographic inquiry into the disconnect between history and experience, especially in the context of Hollywood and its impact on California. Subjects in the series range from the life and career of Jane Fonda, mid-century modern architecture in California, and historical landscapes.
This work is inspired by a photograph by Julius Schulman who captured Ayn Rand in 1947 in her Richard Neutra designed house in Los Angeles. Here, Porter has scanned and cropped the original photograph, overlaid it with grass and plants from the Little Bighorn Battlefield, and re-photographed it, creating a collage of varying subject matter.
