Monique Prieto Bio

About The Artist

In the paintings and prints of Monique Prieto, short snippets of blocky text float on colorful abstract backgrounds. Phrases from the 17th-century diaries of Samuel Pepys have popped up on her canvases, as have flat biomorphic shapes and wobbly grids. She often uses computers to arrange her compositions, which may account for the unmoored sensation her work transmits.

Prieto is based in Los Angeles but has also shown frequently in New York and London, and is represented by galleries in all three cities (ACME, Cheim & Read, and Corvi-Mora, respectively). She has been in group exhibitions at numerous museums including the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, and the Tate Liverpool.
