Navin June Norling's Ring the Alarm is a provocative cartoon. The style of this caricature of a black man references the practice of blackface—a form of theatrical makeup worn by white men in minstrel shows to give degrading performances based in racist stereotypes. This outdated representation of an African-American, shocking and no longer politically correct, is contrasted with a modern urban image of a boombox. The character holds a picture of a boombox, perhaps representing black urban life, but rings his old-fashioned alarm high over head from a big bell, warning us that racism is not as outdated as we may wish to believe.Read Less

Navin June Norling's work is influenced by both urban and rural sensibilities. Juxtaposing classic Americana imagery with urban found materials, Norling works off the premise that abandoned objects, whether they are from a farm or a city street, can always be put to an alternative use. Likewise, Norling reuses the symbols, graffiti, and even the walls of a city in his art to communicate what he calls a "collective history" of "power, class, geography, capitalism, and inequality."Read Less
