Roxanne Lowit started her career in the 1970s as a textile designer but soon rose to become one of the world's most celebrated fashion photographers. "I'd take photos of my textiles backstage at the fashion shows," she says, "and eventually I realized that backstage was the place I wanted to be, and photography was what I wanted to do." She is known for her candid images of models and celebrities, capturing her subjects—from Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali to Scarlett Johansson and Johnny Depp—both at work and at play, for publications including Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Tatler. She is credited with creating the "backstage" photograph, capturing the energy and excitement behind the scenes at fashion shows.
Lowit's work has been exhibited in galleries, festivals, and museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She has published several books of her photographs, including Moments (1990), People (2001), Life After Dark (2005), and Backstage Dior (2009), which was named "Book of the Year" by the International Photographer's Association.
