Entitled Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus, this major new artwork was created for New York City’s Columbus Circle by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi and presented by Public Art Fund. The work placed the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room featured many of the trappings of a domestic living room—a couch, a coffee table, a television, bookshelves, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. And through large, loft-style windows, visitors enjoyed dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that were seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. The exhibition opened on September 20, 2012, and its original eight-week run was extended for two weeks to December 2, by popular demand. More than 100,000 visitors from over 30 countries experienced the free exhibition, engaging with a well-known landmark in a new way and experiencing New York City as never before.

Tatzu Nishi is a Japanese artist living in Berlin, Germany, and Tokyo, Japan. He has created unconventional, site-specific public art projects around the world, transforming historical monuments by placing them in domestic settings. His works remove traditional statues from their everyday contexts to create surprising, intimate encounters with familiar monuments, making them accessible to the public in new ways. These projects include Villa Victoria (2002), a temporary functioning hotel around a statue of Queen Victoria for the 2002 Liverpool Biennial; Engel (2002), an imagined one-room apartment over the roof of a 14th-century cathedral in Basel, Switzerland, enclosing a bronze angel-shaped weather vane; Tatzu Nishi: War and peace and in between (2009–2010), two living spaces built around equestrian sculptures at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in association with Kaldor Public Art Projects; and The Merlion Hotel (2011), a temporary hotel suite built around Singapore’s iconic Merlion fountain for the 2011 Singapore Biennial.
