Waltercio Caldas
Waltercio Caldas has become one of the most important Brazilian artists of today. Often associated with the Neo-Concrete movement, he has developed an extensive and consistent production of sculptures, objects, installations, drawings, publishing projects, graphics, and public art since the 1960s. In 1969, Caldas created his first iconic box-objects which outlines the aesthetic research that he undertakes from then on—poetically challenging the assumptions of perception. According to critic Ronaldo Brito, the artist's practice addresses artworks "as language exercises in how to play, inquiring about their meanings."
Among the exhibitions that the artist participated, there are the 19th, 20th and 23th editions of the Bienal de São Paulo, 47th and 52nd editions of the Venice Biennale, Documenta 9 in Kassel and 6th Mercosul Biennial. He has had solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas in Austin, Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Kanaal Art Foundation in Kortrijk, and Museu de Arte da Pampulha in Belo Horizonte. His work has been included in group exhibitions at Museum of Modern Art in New York, Hanbrich Kunsthalle in Cologne, El Museo del Barrio in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others. …
