Curatorial Statement:

BLACK MATTERS is a celebration of art and its power to transform, inspire and empower change in the world.  It is a tribute to the talent and clarity of vision that these 12 artists' work embody. These artists created their work within the unique context of being a Black American male contemporary artist.  The show bears witness to the power of art to mirror the racial tensions in America, provide a window to see beyond the chronically biased perceptions of black males, and opens a door that illuminates the beauty and ugliness of citizenship when you are Black in America.

This show was inspired by the viral conversation started in 2012 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullers and Opal Tometi, the founders of #BlackLivesMatter. Their efforts have shattered traditional media outlets' version of the news and empowered individuals to tell the real story as it is happening in real time. It is within this digital landscape that ARTSPACE.COM is proud to present Black Matters.

The works in this show are embedded in a social justice context that enriches and expands their relevance as art. ARTSPACE.COM offers affordable access to all collectors who appreciate the provocative self-reflective contemporary art in BLACK MATTERS
