Xing Danwen Bio

About The Artist

Xing Danwen was born in 1967 in Xian, Shaanxi Province and received her BFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2001. As one of the few internationally recognized female Chinese contemporary photographers, Xing exhibits all over the world and is represented by many important museum and private collections, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, Centre George Pompidou, and the International Center of Photography. Xing Danwen's rich and varied artistic practice touches upon issues such as socio-cultural dislocation, tensions between globalization and traditional forces, environmental disasters created by uncontrolled development, and the disconnect between desire and reality which typically suffuses urban life. Fiction, truth, and illusion play an important role in her works.
