About The Work
Still from Alex Prager's first short film Despair, which she made in 2010 as a way to create a “full-sensory version” of her own photographs. Inspired by 'The Red Shoes', a 1948 film in which a prima ballerina’s conflict between dance and her need for love proves fatal, Despair focuses on the before and after of a single, intense moment. Starring actress Bryce Dallas Howard, the four-minute film engages specific constructs of Hollywood; stages and sets, characters, costuming, climactic music, and special effects. Despair not only reflects Prager’s fascination with visual theatricality, but also her acute understanding of cinematic melodrama. With an original score by Ali Helnwein, Despair first premiered at the Museum of Modern Art New York in its ‘New Photography 2010' exhibition.
