Creating objects and images in a variety of media, up-and-coming Canadian artist Chloe Wise crafts totems of pleasure and guilt—pulling inspiration from designer goods, sticky sweet meats and breads and sexual gadgets. Exploring various cultural responses to so called “guilty” pleasures, Wise infuses her flashy, urethane cast breakfast foods and painted portraits with thoughtful criticism, pulled from various essays on queer and feminist theory. Consumptive goods and sexualized bodies become one in the same for Wise, who re-contextualizes both treasured and mundane objects with the same symbolic aplomb. Fetish takes on new representation in works like Ain't No Challah Back (Pack) Girl, 2015, which features a urethane loaf of challah bread, adorned with Prada backpack hardware.
Chloe Wise’s work was included in the Last Brucennial, New York, Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, Georgia, Nordic Lights, Sweden, Unrealism, curated by Jeffrey Deitch, Miami, Florida and Frieze London in conjunction with Salon 94. She has had solo exhibitions at Division Gallery in Montreal and Toronto, Galerie Sébastien Bertrand, Geneva, Switzerland, and Retrospective Gallery, Hudson, New York.
