About The Work

Gathering inspiration from Italian and Japanese Aesthetics, Christina Burch uses the skull motif as a recurring theme throughout her ongoing series entitled Garland of Skulls. At times hidden, the skull image points to impermanence and enlightened awareness beyond birth and death. Burch anchors her imagery in symbolic logic and fantasy, indicative of the enlightened mind. Her canvases expand upon the teachings of Buddhist philosophy within a contemporary context, resulting in works that are characterized by a sense of magical realism and suprasensual.

About Christina Burch

Christina Burch’s paintings are inspired by a variety of art and cultural contexts, including her extensive travels in Italy, Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine education at the Swedish Institute in New York, Japanese and Tantric painting, and passion for Contemporary Art. Characterized by vivid color, stylized ornament, clean surfaces, lyrical imagery, and a poetic, sensuous and magical quality, Burch has gained an important global clientele for her commissioned work. The Eastern view of energy and embodiment has been very influential in her recent works which contemplate the sensual, poetic dimension of figuration in painting.

Burch’s work has been shown in a number of exhibitions including Voltz Clarke Gallery, New York, New York, and Adler & Co. Gallery, San Francisco, California. She has done special projects for Swarovski, Bazaar, Salvatore Ferragamo and others. Most recently her work has been on view at The Armory Show, Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Philip de Pury, and the Watermill Center in the Hamptons.
