About The Work
A tender yet multifaceted photographic print, in an edition of 100, Duane Michals’s Good Morning Glory pictures lively morning glory blooms in the shape of a traditional Japanese fan, as well as hand-applied text reading, “Good Morning, Glory, How do you do? Your blue reminds me of the eyes of someone I once knew.” In this way, Michals introduces a sort of love poem into a format that references Ukiyo-e, a popular genre of Japanese woodblock printing. Noted for the absence of perspective and flat areas of pronounced color, the English translation of Ukiyo-e is “floating world.” Images of this genre aspire to divorce the viewer from the mundane and lift the spirit to the realm of the transcendent.
