    About The Work

Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of Canada's most successful photographers.

Born in Southern Ontario, Burtynsky’s close contact with a local General Motors plant inspired interest in the interactions of industry and environment.

A noted filmmaker, entrepreneur and environmental advocate, his work is known internationally for documenting the consequences and processes of using the earth's natural resources.

The images of industrial and environmental sites are aestheticized, where desecrated lands become beautiful, resulting in painterly, almost abstracted images.

For this series, Burtynsky travelled to Gujarat, India, to the region of Little Ran of Kutch. In an intense 10-day helicopter shoot, images were captured of an age-old process of salt extraction from the floodplains of the Arabian Sea.

Environmental and climate changes, poor governmental support, and diminishing market values threaten the 400 year-old tradition that has seen over 10 million lbs. of salt each year.

Rather than seeing the human world and natural world as separate, these images remind the viewer of the constant dialogue between humans and their environments. It is here that Burtynsky captures the mark of human development on the earth and its embedded political, social, and economic consequences.

Included with the photographic print is a limited edition bound collection of this series, also entitled "Salt Pans".
