About The Work
In a lecture at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Inka Essenhigh explained how when she worked at a fabric design company she realized that the “stuff I was making for pajamas was more interesting and more fun than anything I was making in my studio. So I went back to my studio and made wallpaper for girls and wallpaper for boys…I knew I was on the right track.” This screen print incorporates a flattened repeated cartoon character reminiscent of patterned apparel, but with the artist’s signature surrealism–the horses’ bodies morphing into various blob formations.
