In this work a doll is crushed by the book "Fishin' Jimmy" published in 1889 by Annie Trumble Slosson. The short book depicts the life of Jimmy, a fisherman admired for his relationship with the natural world and for his kindness to animals and children.
From her early photographs of dolls acting like humans, to more recent explorations of humans who resemble dolls, Laurie Simons has spent her career blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Since the early 1980's Simmons has been at the forefront of the New York City art scene that re-appropriated media and visual culture to comment on society. This is an important early work from her highly influential practice.
