About The Work
This work pares back the camera apparatus to a single pixel and a minimalist digital imaging chain. This radical re-imagining of the capture process--which bends light into voltage, voltage into sound, sound into data, data into image--delineates each point of manipulation in the imaging chain and makes design decisions apparent. The resulting imagery acts as dusty panes or warped mirrors through which the system of photography, and by extension the industrial, social, political and cultural systems of which it is a part, can be considered. This image is the result of recording the light on the New York City Subway with one of the artist's handbuilt Single Pixel Cameras.
