In 2016 - on the occasion of its 11th Anniversary - BROADWAY 1602 opened its two new gallery locations BROADWAY 1602 UPTOWN in the Upper Eastside and BROADWAY 1602 HARLEM. In 2015, the gallery had already started a new format, BROADWAY 1602 OUTDOORS, producing site-specific art projects on international and local platforms.
BROADWAY 1602 is a contemporary art gallery with a decade of expertise in introducing the pioneering work of women artists from the 1960s and 70s from the Pop Art, Minimal and Concept Art milieu. Evelyne Axell, Rosemarie Castoro, Babette Mangolte, Idelle Weber, Lenora de Barros, Lydia Okumura, Penny Slinger, Sylvia Palacios Whitman, Wanda Czelkowska, are among the women avant-garde artists represented by the gallery.
BROADWAY 1602 represents the Estate of pre-war Swiss born Bauhaus artist Xanti Schawinsky who immigrated to the U.S. in 1936. We have further presented seminal work of New York’s postwar avant-garde: Experiments in Art & Technology (E.A.T.), David Tudor and Composers Inside Electronics (CIE), Robert Whitman and George Segal.
In our contemporary program we represent Israeli conceptual photographer Oran Hoffman, the U.S. painter Devin Leonardi, Polish filmmaker Anna Molska, British painter Mark Alexander and Canadian painter and writer Paul P., who also creates functional design. Since 2016 we are working with Beninese installation artist George Adéagbo.
BROADWAY 1602 was established in New York in 2005 by curator, critic and estate management specialist Anke Kempkes and has alliances with the most prominent private collections and museums worldwide.
