About The Work

'Burnout' is a commonly used term in the textile industry to describe a process for treating velvet fabrics with acid; it is a process of erasure. In the textile industry, this process occurs with streamlined mechanical precision. Photographs of torsos wearing patterned shirts and making bodily gestures are burned and hand etched onto fields of pristine silk velvet. These torso portrait images are taken with Matthew Brandt’s camera phone in impromptu situations and then translated onto velvet surfaces.
