Pipilotti Rist creates video and audio installations, as well as two dimensional work, all of which are characterized by a vibrancy and quietly sardonic wit. Rist's practice blurs the boundaries between the worlds of commercial art and fine art, borrowing heavily from the lock and feel of advertising, and drawing on her background as a rock musician and set designer. However, she often injects familiar inagery with a sense of critical surreality, resulting in hypnotic, hallucinatory works. Rist's films take on a sculptural presence, and her work has been screened in a variety of contexts, from a billboard in Times Square to a crack in a floorboard at MoMA PS1. Rist released her first feature length film, Pepperminta, in 2009. In it, she portrays an "anarchist of the imagination," living in a futuristic rainbow villa according to her own rules. Rist's work has been exhibited worldwide, at venues including the Centre Pompidou, MoMA, KIASMA Museum for Contemporary Art in Helsinki, the Hayward Gallery in London, among many others, and her films have been screened at festivals such as Sundance and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
