Brooklyn-based photographer Lucas Blalock uses highly unique and innovative post-production techniques to map, meld and re-form photographic objects and images. His compositions exist in an ever-shifting middle ground between abstract and figurative, digital and analog. The artist says of his practice, “I started to consider how much labor was hidden in the making of a photograph, and began making the evidence of these things part of my picture-making. In the way I was working, this was not only with the physical/optical apparatus of the studio, but also the computer’s tools. In the past few years, with increasing intensity, I have come full circle to thinking about picture-making as a way around the narrow, spectacular magic of the commodity, and as having a much deeper relationship to genuine possibility."*

Lucas Blalock has been a resident at The Fields Project, Oregon, Illinois, 2005, and Yarding: Branch Summer Projects, Carrboro, North Carolina. His publications include the artist’s books Towards a Warm Math (2011) and I Believe You, Liar (2009), as well as a series of interviews with artists for The Photography Post (2010–11). His work has been included in exhibitions at Contact Gallery, Toronto, Art in General, New York, Ramiken Crucible, New York, Festival of the Photograph, Deep Rock, Virginia, 92Y Tribeca, New York, Kate Werble Gallery, New York, Photographers’ Gallery, London, Higher Pictures, New York, Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts, New York, American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, Washington, DC and Eighth Veil, Los Angeles.
