Sam Moyer

Sam Moyer’s abstract work pushes the boundaries of what might be considered painting by integrating a wide variety of materials. What began as an experiment with bleach on India ink-soaked canvas has evolved into a practice that also integrates marble, painted glass, Plexiglas, and wood. Reconsidering the rules for hanging something seemingly two-dimensional on a wall, her works are often complimented by sculptural components that have the simultaneous magnitude and simplicity of a Richard Serra or Donald Judd piece. Textures and finishes often mirror or contradict one another, encouraging unanticipated potential to arise from the materials she manipulates.

Moyer has been featured in prominent exhibitions including Greater New York (2010) at MoMA PS 1 and The Last Brucennial (2014) in New York City. She was commissioned for a public sculpture by Art Basel Miami Beach in 2014 and by the Public Art Fund in 2010 for MetroTech Center. She has also shown at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto in Italy, The Drawing Center in New York, Corcoran Museum in Washington D.C., among others.
