Ed Atkins

Ed Atkins’s oeuvre consists largely of digital videos and photography, in which he often incorporates computer generated characters and scenes as a means to explore the ways in which digital forms of representation can create new versions of reality. These works are typically combined in installations of video, photography, drawing, poetry, and collage. Atkins’s 2013 video Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths, for example, is notable for its inclusion of avant-garde lighting, color, and the framing strategies of 20th century experimental film, which together depict an animated man reciting poetry by American writer Gilbert Sorrentino.

Atkins has been the focus of major solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1, the Bonn Kunstverein, Tate Britain, and London’s Cabinet Gallery. Atkins was a recipient of The Jerwood/Film & Video Umbrella Award in 2012. He participated in The Mirror residency at Wysing Arts Centre and was writer-in-residence at the Whitechapel Gallery from 2012 to 2013. He has received several commissions, including projects for Frieze Art Fair and Channel 4, and his work can be found in major public collections worldwide.
