About The Work
An affecting, emotionally wrought image, Woman in Slip was produced in a limited edition of 20; additionally, it was published by Aperture in Other Rooms (2014), the first comprehensive book of Callis’s seductive photographs from the 1970s. Here, a female subject appears sitting upright in a chair and tightly grasping a ribbon-like material—Callis’s decision to crop the composition so as to exclude the woman’s head has the effect of turning the viewers attention to the model’s anxiety-ridden pose. Such is the brilliance of Callis’s work:opposing emotions—those of comfort and tension, in this case—are captured in a single frame.
