About The Work

Long before she produced her classic work The Dinner Party and effectively invented feminist art, Chicago lived in Los Angeles, where she made sculptural work inspired largely by the particular branch of Californian abstraction known as “finish fetish” and exemplified by the work of artists like John MacCracken, Robert Irwin, and James Turrell. This sculpture, completed during that period, is part of a series of works made of trios of acrylic half-domes with opalescent surfaces, clearly representative of the movement’s influence on the young artist’s style, but also suggestive of the seriality and materials that would define her later work.
