How Avant-Garde Was Vermeer? See 5 Contemporary-Art Echoes of the Dutch Master
Gold Barbara by Deborah Kass, 2013
We've seen the stake that French Impressionism and the Italian Renaissance has claimed on the contemporary art world with the works of Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Sandro Botticelli, and the same can be said with the paintings of 17th century Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. Exalting every day genre scenes of Dutch domestic life, Vermeer is recognized for his intimate portraits of female protagonists, a subject that is still very much on the minds of artists today.

Drawn from Phaidon’s newly updated monograph Vermeer in conjunction with the Artspace archives, these five pairs of Dutch paintings and contemporary works (now available on Artspace) continue to exhibit the past's grip on art today.
