About The Work
Handforth reinterprets the traditional representation of a bleeding heart by turning the symbol upside down and using the broadsheet pages from the Financial Times as its canvas. Made as part of his 2010 solo exhibition at The Modern Institute, the premise for which played on the four suits in a set of playing cards – spades, clubs, diamonds and hearts. In this varied edition the subtle reference to contemporary politics and its relation to a card game is hinted at but at the same time disguised, the context Handforth creates demanding a second-look from the viewer instead of allowing them to forget just another symbol of kitsch culture.
