    About The Work

Halley’s work Pardes 5761 is based on a conception of geometry as a metaphor for society. The elements of his iconography are yellow and orange rectangular cell units, linked by linear conduits, which may represent the individual organisms and networks of contemporary urban existence. The result is a rectangular spiral that recedes into space and appears like a corridor or hallway. “Pardes” means orchard or garden in Hebrew and in Jewish mysticism is the “Garden of Eden.” The word also refers to the four levels of textual interpretation in Judaism: peh (literal meaning), resh (allegorical meaning), dalet (moral meaning), and samekh (mystical meaning). Possibly, Halley’s work is an abstracted depiction of the “Garden of Eden” or represents the levels of understanding in interpreting a work. This work retains many of the minimalist elements and geometric abstraction of Halley’s overall aesthetic.
