Artist and writer Carrie Moyer is known for paintings that merge mid-century abstraction with highly political iconography. Powerfully gestural, Moyer’s work pulls from, and critiques, a history of Feminist Art that includes the work of Georgia O’Keefe and Judy Chicago. Interweaving fertility symbology, abstract shapes, color, glitter and invented avatars, Moyer creates surreal and historical compositions that are almost alchemical. What Moyer refers to as an “ongoing interrogation of Modernism with a significantly expanded visual lexicon,” has come to define her technically precise and boldly suggestive work.

Moyer‘s work has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally, including such venues as PS1/Institute on Contemporary Art, the Palm Beach ICA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Weatherspoon, Cooper-Hewitt and Tang Museums, Shedhalle, Zurich, Le Magasin, Grenoble, and the Project Centre, Dublin, among others. Moyer was also the founder of the public art project, Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!). One of the first queer interventionist public art projects, DAM!'s culture-jamming campaigns dissected mainstream visual culture between 1991-2004 by inserting lesbian images into recognizably commercial contexts. Her essays and reviews have appeared in Art in America, Artforum, Brooklyn Rail and Modern Painters. Moyer is the recipient of numerous awards including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, Anonymous Was A Woman Award as well as a Creative Capital Grant.
