    About The Work

In this print, Albert Oehlen appropriates the imagery and tone of tabloid magazines, but jumbles the relation of the text and photo, calling attention to their surreal, satirical narrative. Here, it is suggested that the Pope has begged a mother to allow him to kill his own demonic offspring. The baby’s onesie bears an embroidered name, “Anselm,” a chiding reference to Oehlen’s contemporary, the German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer.
