About The Work
New Yorker Alex Katz is known for his depictions of his friends and social scene in the mid 1950s. In this color silkscreen print, the artist has rendered two of his peers, titling the work “Pas de Demux” which in the world of ballet, refers to a dance duet, literally translated from french to english as “step of two.” Exemplary of Katz’s clear lines and minimal approach to portraiture, this piece is typical of his compositions, which often feature a solid dark background. Katz’s graphic works were precursors to Pop Art by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and have continued to transfix generations of viewers since the 50s.
