Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is one of the most famous artists of all time. His expressive, colorful work and his eventful life move and inspire people throughout the world. Van Gogh’s deepest longing was to make a difference for his fellow human beings. After finding he was unsuited to be an art dealer or a preacher, he decided at the age of 27 to become an artist. At that time Van Gogh had not yet shown much evidence of special artistic talent, but with great determination he found his own way. He taught himself his art through long practice and experimentation, and by paying careful attention to other people's work and advice. He often choseto express his ideas by depicting everyday subjects. Van Gogh strove to create a new kind of art, one in which he could give expression to our most profound existential emotions in a direct and universally comprehensible manner.

The hundreds of paintings and drawings that Van Gogh produced in a mere decade (1880-1890) made an enormous impact. His art influenced generations of artists, and is still very much alive in our visual culture.
