About The Work
In Bahia Still Life, Billy Sullivan makes a simple breakfast platter appear intimate and interesting. Though famous for his New York images, Sullivan says he was highly influenced by European artists and his time in Paris. His deft use of color and space in his still lives is often compared to the compositions of French artists Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard. Vibrant and seemingly spontaneous, Sullivan's photographs serve as his visual diary and as a "floor plan" from which to create paintings.
