Since the 1980s Candida Höfer has created large-format photographs of empty public spaces that reflect Bernd and Hilla Bechers's teachings on “objective” straight-forward photography. This image was taken at the Theatre of Calais in France, and captures a side view of the various curtains onstage. This image was included in the Merce Cunningham Dance Company 50th Anniversary Portfolio, which in addition to Höfer, includes work from Chuck Close, Olafur Eliasson, Gregory Crewdson, Peter Fischli, and Cindy Sherman, among others.
