    About The Work

Since the 1980s Candida Höfer has created large-format photographs of empty public spaces that reflect Bernd and Hilla Bechers's teachings on “objective” straight-forward photography. This image was taken at the Philip Johnson Library–one of the fourteen buildings that make up the The Glass House, a 49 acre National Trust Historic Site designed by postmodern architect Philip Johnson. The chaos of the books nestled within the ordered shelves encapsulates what Hofer calls the "psychology of social architecture" that subconsciously pervades the consciousness of those it shelters.
