About The Work
Though Fred Sandback is known for his Minimalist three-dimensional works, the artist also explored printmaking as a means of investigating the spatial concerns of his sculptures. Like these canonical works executed in wire, yarn, and cord, this extraordinary lithograph from 1975 (it was made in an edition of 20) draws attention to the empty space surrounding the black streak. This bold gesture points to the multiple planes that are demarcated as a simple consequence of drawing a line.
