About The Work
Since 2015, Dávila has been exploring history of art and the concept of originality. Superimposition is a prehistoric art form commonly found in rock paintings where depictions of bison and other animals have been discovered overlaid on the cave walls, one on top of another. With Carelessly Drawn Horse, Dávila invokes this layering technique, creating a palimpsest that is not only a fractal of the history of art but also a continuation of it. From a book on the origins of art and pre-historic painting, printed in Oxford in 1918, Dávila has chosen extracts of text that accompanied illustrated plates; these scientific images and diagrams have then been obscured by details from minimalist paintings by Ellsworth Kelly. Thus, the artist creates a mosaic of the past contained by the present – a juxtaposition that raises age-old existential questions to do with meaning, tradition and time.
