    About The Work

This screen print was made in conjunction with the final film in Matthew Barney’s magnus opus, The Cremaster Cycle. The series conceptually follows the male cremaster muscle which raises and lowers the testes during the embryonic process–in the fifth film it is in its most descended state of sexual differentiation. Barney envisions this act as a tragic love story set in the romantic dreamscape of late-nineteenth-century Budapest. Biological metaphors are translated into emotional states expressed in lyric opera. Featured in this print is the singer, Queen of Chain (played by Ursula Andress), wearing a glass testes-shaped dumbbell on her head. She is enveloped by Barney’s recurrent motif, the “field emblem,” a symbol for equilibrium, or a representation of an orifice open (capsule shape) and closed (horizontal line).
