About The Work
In this set of two color woodcuts, Minimalist master and Conceptual art pioneer Sol LeWitt offers a variation on his career-long exploration of geometry and conceptual art. In Untitled (from Notes on a Room), LeWitt executes two variations on the theme of "color divided by wavy lines,” in navy, magenta, green and grey-blue. Reducing the concept of art to one of its most basic elements, color, LeWitt remarks on his belief, outlined in his iconic text Sentences on Conceptual Art, that art is defined as a concept, not an object. This piece is from a portfolio entitled Notes on a Room, which LeWitt created alongside Louise Lawler and Richard Artschwager.
