About The Work
This beautiful and whimsical original lithographic poster with a smiling surreal sailboat riding on a green sea was created by Jean Cocteau to promote travel to Monaco. After reaching national and international acclaim as a poet, a writer, and a painter amongst many talents, the Principality of Monaco approached him to create this promotional poster. A regular member of the avant-garde, he maintained long-term friendships with artists such as Pablo Picasso and spent much of his time in the South of France. With his work as a writer and director of film, Cocteau is widely credited as the father of French New Wave Cinema.
