About The Work
This poster was created for the Art Festival in Avignon in 1973 at the "Popes Palace". The work chosen illustrates a later painting in which a gaunt and ghost-like figure is seen holding a paintbrush, in what is most probably Picasso's reference to his own impending death, which occurred in April of the same year. As the Czwiklitzer reference catalog stops in February of 1973, this work is not included and has no number. It was nonetheless produced faithfully by Mourlot Master Printer, Henri Deschamps, who worked closely with Picasso for decades and it certainly retains a haunting quality because it was the painter's final year.
