Jayson Musson is best known for his work as the character Hennessy Youngman in Art Thoughtz. Described by Art in America as "Ali G with an MFA," Youngman spouts sharply critical observations about the art world through the guise of a foul-mouthed, swaggering hip-hop personality. Musson has recently made the leap into the world of abstract painting with his well-received summer 2012 exhibition at Salon 94, New York. Technically not paintings at all, his recent works are actually recycled Coogi sweaters mounted on stretchers and transformed into pictures. Coogi sweaters are wildly colored knit garments popularized in the 1980s by Bill Cosby and later, in the 1990s, by the rapper Notorious B.I.G.
Fleisher/Ollman will present a solo exhibition of Musson's Coogi sweater paintings and abstract animations from December 6, 2012-January 19, 2013 entitled A True Fiend's Weight. Musson debuted his latest body of work in Halcyon Days at Salon 94 Bowery, New York. He has also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Dazed & Confused Magazine Gallery, London; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; and Postmasters Gallery, New York. Musson received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Arts, Philadelphia and his MFA in Painting from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Brooklyn.
