    About The Work

"Pagosa Springs" is a paradigm of Frank Stella's work. It is a descendant of his Copper Series paintings from 1960-61 that were some of the most celebrated and widely exhibited works from Stella's early career. Several of Frank Stella's prints revisit/reinterpret his most successful and inconic paintings.

Besides the striking metallic coloring, these works were impactful for their highly original, curiously shaped canvases. This body of work is considered as an important bellwether of Minimalism.

In 1970 Stella created a portfolio of 7 complex prints, named after the mining towns in the mountains of Colorado (that sourced silver and copper) active at the turn of the century.  Appropriately these lithographs were created using several screens of metallic copper paints and tinted varnishes.

“Pagosa Springs” is one of the most extraordinary images from the series, featured on a full page in Stella’s catalogue raisonné.
