About The Work

From their Fourth Plinth commission in Trafalgar Square, London to the remote Prada storefront in Marfa, Texas and most recently, a monumental ear-shaped pool in Rockefeller Center, New York, Elmgreen & Dragset's deeply thoughtful yet humorous artworks challenge institutional conventions in the public domain.

Demonstrating their commitment to honoring the legacy of the globalAIDS epidemic, the artists offered a painting from their recent Self-Portrait series. Playing with notions of appropriation and identity, they title each piece Self-Portrait after an artwork that triggers an emotional development from their own lives.

Here, they reference David Wojnarowicz, a key figure in the AIDS activist movement of the 1980's whose untimely death in 1992 was the result ofAIDS-related illness. By transforming the appearance of worn, indistinguishable wall labels into glorified artworks, the artists turn the overlooked into to the iconic.
