About The Work
The “Echo” series is comprised of unique paintings that Sam Gilliam gifted to his master printmaker, Minneapolis-based Steven M. Andersen. The two would often exchange services for art.
The “Echo” paintings are the last artworks by the artist to be produced at this scale. Since most acrylic paints tend to dry, harden, crack, and flake off rather quickly, Sam Gilliam turned to Robert Gamblin, founder of Portland’s Gamblin Artist Colors, for a new paint that would retain its thickness throughout its drying cycle. To this day, this one-of-a-kind pigmented composition is still exclusively sold to/used by Sam Gilliam.
