    About The Work

David Hockney (b. 1937) had an interesting relationship with photography- he used it as a tool in preparation for painting and simultaneously subverting and pushing the boundaries of the medium. Most notably, from the '70s until the early '80s Hockney experimented and produced a wide body of photo-based work including his highly innovative photo-collages, called "Joiners".

This work is from the famed portfolio "Twenty Photographic Pictures, 1976". The pictured couple is Hockey's parents, who were a favorite subject matter of the artist. In this image, we are presented with a playful view, as his father turns the camera's eye (and artist's hand) on his son while his mother looks on with a smile. It's a peaceful and poignant image with layers of meaning, immortalizing his father who passed away a couple of years after it was taken.

This photo recalls some of Hockney's most iconic and renowned paintings featuring his parents. We often assume that figurative painters singly refer to photographs; that photos are a crutch or a necessity for successful canvases. Here the preparatory material becomes a work in its own right... and a testament to Hockney's genius and two of his biggest muses.
