    About The Work

The work of Paul McCarthy investigates the stereotypes and myths surrounding American popular culture, with particular focus on the unconscious effects of media, consumerism and iconography. Dealing with issues such as Hollywood, television, and eroticism, McCarthy’s drawings, films, sculptures, environments and installations stand at the intersection of perception and taboo, lifting the underbelly of American life into the spotlight. This limited edition piece for The Skateroom transforms a grimy jar of Miracle Whip mayonnaise into an icon of subversion.

Through this collection, The Skateroom and Paul McCarthy aim to entirely finance the building of Skateistan’s first skate school on the African continent, in central Johannesburg. The innovative facility will use “the hook” of skateboarding to connect vulnerable youth to educational and leadership opportunities. The skate park and educational facility will help bridge socio-economic differences through skateboarding and educational activities amongst the youth of the city and its suburbs.

Each time The Skateroom produces a new artist, part of the proceeds are donated to Skateistan (, an NGO that works with youth from Afghanistan and Cambodia, building trust and providing empowerment and skills through a combination of skateboarding and educational activities.
