About The Work

Henri Matisse’s first exposure to the world of dance came in 1919 when he worked design costumes for a traveling Ballet company based in Paris—Ballets Russes. This lithograph is from a portfolio of ten prints titled Dix Danseuses (Ten Dancers) that studies the various positions of a ballerina. In Danseuse Endormie au Divan the dancer is depicted in an intimate and vulnerable slumber.
